Nature lovers, bird-watchers, explorers…this is the place.

Myakka River State Park in Florida is an ecosystem delight. The park itself covers 58 square miles, and it’s an 8 mile drive into the park just to get back to the recreation hub. Palmetto palms and hardwoods line sun-dappled pathways. Rare and beautiful birds fill the numerous ecosystems inside the park. Crocodiles sun on the edges of the undeveloped river which cuts a wide quiet swath. The wildlife is pretty friendly here; the animals have a sense they won’t be disturbed in this preserve. Kayaks and canoes are rented at the concessions, or if you’re feeling like letting someone else do the work, you have multiple options. An airboat ride will take you up the river. A ferry ride offers a narrated tour around the main waters. And, if you just want to be a landlubber, there’s a trolley which offers guided tours around the park. The tour also reaches areas of the park not open to the public. Miles of trails wind through the park for hiking or bicycling. Three campground areas offer both primitive and improved sites. For a great sunset, take your camera out to the bird boardwalk. Actually, there’s enough places in the park to view a different sunset every night of your week-long stay. If you really want the birds-eye view, take the canopy walk through the tops of the trees. Climb the observation tower at the end, 76 feet closer to the sky. Beer taps, wine, and food are available in the concessions, along with the biggest gift shop I’ve personally seen in the state of Florida, including hand-crafted arts. Myakka River State Park was one of my favorite places to explore in Florida.

The downsides: Getting a reservation can be tricky unless you reserve well in advance. Also, numerous votes during my stay recommended passing on the regular burger, and ordering the veggie burger instead, if you eat at the Pink Gator restaurant in the park. Pick a site away from the main drive if you want quiet. People love this park.
